Ray Bareiss, Ph.D.

Senior Vice President, Principal AI Scientist

Dr. Bareiss's career in artificial intelligence and educational technology spans nearly four decades. At Socratic Arts, Dr. Bareiss has deepened his involvement in AI by contributing to the development of proprietary tools and exploring the innovative applications of large language models, such as ChatGPT, in a wide range of educational contexts. Based on this work, he predicts that generative AI will fundamentally transform education.

His current areas of exploration at the nexus of AI and education include:

  • Course content generation using large language models
  • Use of large language models for mentoring courses
  • Interactive simulations driven by large language models
  • Interactive decision aids using large language models
  • Code generation and "codeless" data analytics using large language models.

Dr. Bareiss's journey began in the Computer Science Ph.D. program at the University of Texas at Austin in 1984, where he initially focused on machine learning. Dissatisfied with the limitations of the technology of that era, he shifted his focus to the study of expert knowledge and automated knowledge acquisition systems that interacted with human experts to solve complex problems; the result was the Protos automated knowledge acquisition system, a successful early application of case-based reasoning.

Dr. Bareiss's career has encompassed a broad range of academic and corporate experience:

  • Director of the Institute for the Learning Sciences at Northwestern University where he researched and developed performance support and eLearning Solutions grounded in cognitive science research.
  • Cofounder of Cognitive Arts where he developed eLearning solutions for major corporations and contributed to the emergence of online virtual universities.
  • Founding faculty member of Carnegie Mellon University's Silicon Valley campus where he collaborated on the development of unique project-based, learn-by-doing graduate programs.
  • In 2012, he joined Socratic Arts and its sister company, Experiential Teaching Online, to focus on developing learn-by-doing professional education in technical fields, including cybersecurity, data analytics, software development, and eCommerce technology. His current work focuses on the incorporation of AI technology into the companies' development processes and the learning experiences they deliver.
