Tammy Berman, Ph.D.

Senior Vice President of Design

Dr. Berman oversees and leads performance improvement projects for corporations, government, and non-profit organizations, including learning needs analyses and learning solution design to enable practitioners to get the help they need when they need it most. Dr. Berman has special expertise in the design of learning-by-doing and Story-Centered learning programs, for a range of modalities. Dr. Berman has also helped lead the effort in the development of a suite of authoring tools for web-based program development for Socratic Arts.

In addition to her corporate work, Dr. Berman has served as the senior designer for university-level online degree programs for Carnegie Mellon University's Silicon Valley Campus and BES LaSalle University, in Barcelona, Spain. She was also the senior designer for a story-centered high-school curriculum in Health Sciences, under a grant from the Ewing Marion Kaufmann Foundation. Prior to joining Socratic Arts, Dr. Berman was a Vice President of Design at Cognitive Arts Corporation, where she designed web-mentored, learn-by-doing courses for corporate and university clients. She also consulted on several projects for "big six" consulting firms, as well as government agencies, designing learning-by-doing training programs and evaluating and redesigning existing courses.

Dr. Berman is co-author of several articles and book chapters on designing learning-by-doing educational programs. She has provided keynote and other presentations for multiple conferences. She holds a Ph.D. in the Learning Sciences from Northwestern University, where she studied under the guidance of Dr. Roger Schank. Her dissertation is entitled, Why Corporate Training Doesn't Work: Trainers' Common Misconceptions about Learning; Resulting Course Design Errors; and Design Principles for Constructing Effective Training Courses.
